Home Up

Summer of 1971, Madison, Wisconsin
Twenty-five charter members contributed $10 each for the start-up expenses as Southern Wisconsin Snowmobile Racing Association (S.W.S.R.A.) was born.  Registration and payback was completed out of Frank Hess's old red VW van. S.W.S.R.A. was deferential doing oval in the winter and drags in the summer.  Race directors changed successively.

Staffing and Race Directors change again. Kathy Schlueter became the secretary/treasurer for S.W.D.R.A. to the present time.  Perry Schlueter in 1987 became their Race Director and continues in this role at the present time. Perry and Kathy began as a team in 1976 when Perry raced in the modified division and their sons, Kerry and Brent raced the junior program.  They combined their experience and knowledge of racing to help develop a more professional racing circuit.  They too remembered the long hauls, part expenses, but focused more on the strength of S.W.D.R.A. was being a second family with sportsmanship being one of their major goals for the circuit. Perry coordinated a very dedicated racing personnel who help maintain operations for a smooth running race.
Expansion,1987
S.W.D.R.A. doubled its size in membership within one year and began traveling in a wider range of locations for their race sites to Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. In the office of Southern Wisconsin is a waiting list of promoters who want to become part of the racing schedule.  Drivers come from all over the USA, Canada and European drivers have also attended.

1. Contingency Program - Perry developed a contingency program into the race day payback to benefit both the drivers and the promoters of the event. This program also created additional money to help racers cover their traveling expenses and maintenance, it drew larger crowds and more racers to the promoter's events.
2. Money point system - In place of 1st place trophies, a money point system was developed to help create revenue for the drivers.
3. Advance technology - Application of a computerized starting and finishing lines, registration, payback and the updating of a communication system was launched.  Additional lights were added to let the racers know if he finished in the top two of heats across the starting line.
